Intercessor Wanted: Apply Within
The life of an intercessor is one that is spent as a go-between or conduit that connects people to the goals they aspire to achieve. An intercessor stands in the gap and comes along side another with the intent to add value to that person's existence.
Intercessors have marvelous gifts of empathy and compassion. Not only do they possess the capacity to be sensitive to the thoughts, feelings, and distresses of others, but they have a genuine desire to help alleviate difficulty in a person’s life and accelerate that person’s positive experiences. Just as servanthood is an attitude of the heart, one must internally possess the spirit of an intercessor.
This web page is appropriately titled Intercessor Wanted: Apply Within. Perhaps there are those who are born with the heart of an intercessor, but I would venture to say the vast majority of human beings have to cultivate this characteristic in their lives. It begins with looking within your own life and determining if you give out more than you take in. Intercessors readily give of themselves. This could be in the form of intercessory prayer which is petitioning God, on behalf of someone else, to lift a burden or meet a need they have. It can also be in the form of intercessory living in general. Intercessory living is simply being sensitive to the needs of another person and acting on their behalf to meet that need.
Consider the words of the following poem. Would anyone describe you this way? If so, you have the heart of an intercessor.
AN INTERCESSOR’S HEART
As I walk along life’s road
Sometimes the journey is lonely, and I feel all alone
I can call upon you to help ease the load
More than willing to walk with me a mile or two
Giving wise counsel when I don’t know what to do
You understand what it’s like to walk in my shoes
Willing to come to my defense, pleading with others on my behalf
If I experience regret and there is no turning back
You encourage me not to live in the past
Ready to meet my needs - offering aid and care
When my burden seems so heavy and more than I can bare
You will lift me up with a thoughtful prayer
What do you say to someone who has such a special touch
Whose impact and influence has meant so much…
These words may seem trite and hard to comprehend
BUT
I will call you my intercessor, I will call you my friend
